 Phil Humphreys, (Home Maintenance Technician) of the Home Improvement Agency at Telford and Wrekin Council reached a milestone recently, when he fitted his hundredth Surestop Water Switch
Telford and Wrekin Council are among an ever increasing list of organisations within the housing sector that are installing Surestops on behalf of tenants and home owners in their area.
The Surestop water switch allows tenants to switch off their water supply at the flick of a switch. So rather than having to locate and turn off a traditional brass stopcock, which is often very difficult to access and can be awkward to use, customers of the Home Improvement Agency are now be able to control their domestic water supply by using a conveniently located switch.
The Surestop offers many benefits but chief amongst these is that it helps protect properties from water damage. According to recent research undertaken by Halifax Home Insurance
Domestic water leaks cost UK homeowners £1.8 billion and affect 3.3 million households every year. In the event of an emergency, the Surestop can be easily turned off and it also allows tenants to switch off their water supply if they are leaving their property for any length of time.
The Home Improvement Agency within Telford and Wrekin Council aims to help homeowners and private tenants remain safe, secure, comfortable and independent in their own homes. They specialise in helping people who are over 60 or disabled. Their HOMEfix handyperson service started in July 2006 and has been a major success in providing a trusted low cost small repairs service. It complements the range of other services offered by the Agency, from approved gardeners through to major adaptation schemes.
Paul Smith (Agency Services Manager) of The Home Improvement Agency is responsible for overseeing the work of the Agency and sees many benefits in the product.

“We install lots of Surestops for our customers and it is a very popular product. Installation is also very easy. The product consists of a valve which connects directly in to the water supply which is connected by 2 metres of flexible tubing to a switch. We then locate the switch at the most convenient location for our customers. The Surestops operate purely on water pressure, so no batteries or electricity is required and as all of the connections are push fit, it is very simple for a competent plumber to install them.”
